Geology Groups
There are
currently two U3A Geology groups who meet regularly once a month. The
Friday
group has been
going strong for 4 or 5 years and the Monday group for 3. Both
groups have members from both the Marple
and the Marple Bridge U3As.
In the summer we go out in the field. This
year we have been to look at the Carboniferous limestone in the
Manifold
valley, the Triassic sandstones in the Secret Garden at Styal Mill and
the
local rocks in the Torrs
at New Mills. In the winter we meet at Mary's house
and after a Power Point presentation we have coffee
and a close look at related
rock specimens. This winter we will be finding out about the geology of
the
British
Isles, starting in Scotland with some very ancient rocks, (3 billion
years old) and working our way up to the
present.Geology
is
essentially a practical subject and I try to make the sessions as much
"hands on" as possible...
I've got a garage full of rocks from all
over!
