Outing
to Elizabeth Gaskell House and Victoria Baths Friday,
October 28th An outing has been arranged to Elizabeth Gaskell’s house in Manchester followed by a visit to Victoria Baths. Mrs Gaskell’s house in Plymouth Grove was her home from 1850 until her death in 1865. In this house she entertained literary figures of the day such as Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, John Ruskin and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The story of Mrs Gaskell, several of whose works have been televised including ‘Cranford’, is a fascinating one. Arriving at 11am we will have coffee followed by a tour of the house and a short slide show. After lunch we will make the short walk to Victoria Baths. The Baths, which is a grade 2 listed building, closed in 1993 after serving the community for 86 years. The Baths won the BBC programme ‘Restoration’ in 2003 and the prize was £3 million. Since then a huge amount of restoration has taken place and the result is amazing. We will have a
guided tour
of the building starting at 2pm. Cost of the excursion including coffee on arrival, tour of Gaskell House, lunch of
soup and sandwiches and tour of Victoria Baths is £15.00 each. Meet at Marple Station
